Spider Veins | Spider Vein Treatment Options

Spider veins, also referred to as ‘telangiectasias’, are described as small veins just under the skin’s surface. This sort of vein condition is reminiscent of the shape of a spider web.

Spider veins are normally blue or red in color and they form in various sizes. These unsightly veins can be found in various parts of the body such as the legs, ankles, calves, thighs and even on the face.

What Causes Spider Veins?
There are various causes of spider veins such as the normal aging process, being overweight, pre-menstruation and even menopause. Spider veins are also known as an inherited genetic predisposition. Here are other factors that contribute to spider veins:

  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control pills
  • Blood clots
  • Tumors
  • Exposure to ultraviolet rays
  • Past venous surgery
In addition, if you stand for long periods of time, this can add pressure to your leg veins and cause spider veins. People who wear tight under-garments such as support girdles, tend to develop spider veins. Spider veins are more common in women than men because of hormonal changes to the body.

What are common symptoms?
Spider veins, just like varicose veins are very common between the ages of 30-70. The first obvious sign is the appearance of a spider web, as mentioned previously. Some people experience the feeling of heaviness in their legs accompanied with an achy and fatigue feeling. You may also experience a burning and throbbing sensation within your lower legs. Muscle cramping is another symptom of spider veins. Another symptom is referred to as ‘stasis pigmentation’ -- this is when the skin color changes. If left untreated, it can lead to inflammation of the skin and even open sores and bleeding.

Although treatment for spider veins doesn’t prevent new spider veins from developing, spider veins are greatly diminished. Many patients are satisfied with the results because it helps the skin to appear natural and attractive-looking.
One of the most effective treatment options for spider veins is Sclerotherapy. This type of procedure is performed in a physician’s office.

Micro Sclero Therapy for Spider Veins
Spider veins are usually located on the feet, legs, hands and arms. Micro Sclero Therapy is the perfect treatment to eliminate unsightly spider veins. Depending on the amount of spider veins that need to be treated, this technique takes less than 1 hour.  This procedure consists of utilizing high-intensity light to examine the area that needs treatment.  Then the skin is held firmly while injecting a sclerosing agent right into your veins.
Following treatment, you may be required to wear an ace bandage for a couple of days.  It is highly recommended that you avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time. However, it is recommended that you walk often to help avoid blood clots from developing within your vein system. Make sure you avoid strenuous activity or high-impact exercises during the brief recovery process.
